Andy Brear and Ian Walker opened the innings for Stapleford and were greeted by some tight bowling by Linacre and Swannack. Swannack who had produced a fine opening spell of 7-4-7-1, bowled Ian Walker with a jaffa in the 4th over with the score on 7. This though paved the way for a fine stand of 89 between Andy Brear and Mark Fletcher. Drinks arrived and as so often happens it brings a lapse in concentration as Andy Brear fell victim after hitting 6 fours and 3 sixes in his 49 went back to drill Kinsey through the off side and got an edge to first slip where Wright took the catch, to the relief of wicket keeper Ben Holmes who had dropped a howler behind off Linacre when Brear had 32. Harchuk was next in and out as he played an abysmal shot (trust me it was bad!) to Kinsey and was consequently bowled by the young leg spinner for just 2 with the score at 101-3 after 26 overs. Mark's brother Paul joined him at the crease and both played some fine shots. After putting on 39, Mark Fletcher who had got bogged down surely robbed himself of a bigger score when he allowed the ball to pass through to Holmes behind and let the keeper ran him out without any attempt to get back in his crease for a well played 66 which included 6 fours and a six. Jim Wright joined Paul Fletcher, but was somewhat outshone in a 66 run partnerhip as Paul Fletcher started to seriously lay into the Clowne attack with some hard hitting. With the late flurry for runs on with wickets in hand, Fletcher called Wright through for a dicey single and Wright was run out for 12 from a direct hit from Holmes who picked the ball up well and threw down the stumps at the none strikers end. Shortly after Paul Fletcher skied Swannack to point where Kinsey took the catch for a well played 62 which included 7 fours and 2 sixes. Only one more wicket fell as Mark Cliff was ran out going for a crazy 3rd run and was ran out by a mile. Stapleford had finished with 213-6 after their 46 overs. Clownes David Swannack was Clownes best bowler by far and finished with figures of 14-7-40-2.
Tea was taken and as expected the tea was magnificent which is a credit to Clowne Town cricket club as a whole and every Stapleford player appricated the spread laid.
Clowne Town's reply got off to a bad start as Smalley shouldered arms to a good delievery from Paul Fletcher which nipped back to hit the off stump with the score on 18. Smalley made just 6. Holmes and Long took the score to 47 when Ben Holmes swept spinner Nobby Halford to Brear at deep square leg who took a terrific diving catch to send the Clowne captain on his way for 14. During that stand Long has a huge slice of luck after appearing to nick a ball behind off Paul Fletcher and was given not out. This seemed to liven up this encounter and gave the match a real competitive edge. Long was playing well but lost partners Wright and Hendley, both bowled by Paul Fletcher for four and nought respectivly to leave Clowne at 67-4 after 21 overs. Paul Fletcher kept plugging away and finished another great spell of bowling to end up with figures of 14-1-40-3 to go alongside his fine 62 underlining his abilities at this level. By this point Andy Brear was in the attack and he produced a rising delivery which Long gloved to Paul Fletcher at 2nd slip to send Long on his way for a well played 45 which included 5 fours and 2 sixes. After claiming this wicket Brear seemed in the mood to make amends after making just 49 (a failure by his standards) by trapping Matt Osbourne lbw for 7, bowling Rhodes for 0 then later getting the prize wicket of Paul Linacre who had batted with a mixture of defence and attack and threatened to take Clowne to a losing draw, found Harrison at mid wicket. Linacre had struck 5 fours in his 32. Brear finished with final figures of 11-5-24-4 to cap a decent all round effort by Staplefords one man team! Just before Linacre fell, Swannack had been run out in similar circumstances to Mark Fletcher earlier in the day as he was run out not relising he was standing well out of his ground by Parkinson. This left Clowne at 129-9 with Kinsey and Pollard at the wicket. Harchuk was restored to the attack after an erratic spell earlier in the day and bowled a perfect yorker to Pollard who was bowled for 2. This wicket gave Stapleford a precious 27 points and victory by 79 runs. With Shipley gaining a 22 point win against Tibshelf, the gap at the top of 4N has been reduced to 15 points. With a double header next weekend, Stapleford have a chance to gain top spot as Shipley don't have a game on the Sunday.
Final Result
Clowne Town (5) 134 all out (Long 45, P Linacre 32, Brear 4-24, P Fletcher 3-40) lost to Stapleford Town (27) 213-6 (Brear 49, M Fletcher 66, P Fletcher 62) by 79 runs
Meanwhile the 2nds had a disappointing result at home to Ilkeston Rutland. They bowled their local rivals out for just 111 with old man Bri claiming 4-15. The Stapleford reply never got going. From ball one when Scott Law removed Clifford. Law claimed a further 5 wickets to finish with 6-10 dismissing the 2s for 52 giving Ilkeston victory by 59 runs.
